Supreme and Molly Varga talk on perioperative pet care at LVS

Supreme teams up with Molly Varga on perioperative pet care at London Vet Show

Molly Varga, RCVS recognised Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine and Veterinary Advisor to Supreme Petfoods, will be presenting a talk at the 2023 London Vet Show on November 16th, entitled ‘Hop, skip, surgery: optimising the perioperative care of small herbivores’. The presentation, which is sponsored by Supreme, will focus on the practical aspects of perioperative care, including pre and post operative nutritional support, analgesia, and fluid therapy and the positive impact that this has on surgical outcomes. Joining Molly to deliver the presentation will be Craig Tessyman RVN, Exotics Veterinary Nurse Team Leader at Rutland House Veterinary Referrals.

Effective perioperative pet care is a pivotal factor in determining clinical outcomes in small herbivore surgical patients. Molly says that during stressful events, such as periods of hospitalisation or after surgery, maintaining optimal nutrition, as well as analgesia and fluid support, is key to supporting recovery. “Appropriate perioperative pet care decreases morbidity and mortality and reduces the incidence of co-morbidities such as gastric stasis. The clinical condition of small herbivores can deteriorate rapidly, and I am delighted to be speaking at LVS, helping vets and nurses give these small pets the care they need.”

Molly has worked in small animal and exotic medicine across the UK and Canada, and lectures widely on exotic pet medicine and surgery. Holding both a Certificate and a Diploma in Zoological Medicine, she currently heads the Exotics Service at Rutland House Referral Centre and has a particular interest in rabbit medicine and surgery. Molly has contributed to several BSAVA manuals on rabbits and other exotic species, as well as revising and updating the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine.

The presentation will primarily focus on the perioperative management of surgical cases involving rabbits and guinea pigs. Molly and Craig will share their insights and practical tips, which promise to be invaluable for clinical teams in both first opinion settings and referral hospitals, ultimately contributing to improved clinical outcomes for small herbivore patients.

Claire Hamblion, Marketing Director at Supreme Petfoods, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming presentation, saying, “We are delighted to join forces with Molly and Craig once again. With their combined decades of experience, and dedication to improving the veterinary care of small herbivores, there’s no better team to deliver high quality, engaging small pet CPD.”

For those unable to attend the live event, a recorded version of the presentation will be available on the Supreme Vet Zone.

The talk, which counts for one hour of CPD, will be held on November 16th at 3.10pm in the Gallery Suite 22. More information is available here London Vet Show 2023 Conference Programme
