Cool Dog vegan doggy ice cream is set to be a summer sizzler

A new artisan, vegan, lactose-free ice cream just for dogs, has launched in the UK. Available in time for the summer trade, Cool Dog ticks all the boxes on the latest trends, being 100% natural, with no artificial colours or flavours. The brand is also unusual in that it has achieved Food Standards Agency Approval and Trading Standards agreement to be marketed as an ‘ice cream’, rather than a frozen treat. Ice cream is an iconic treat that says ‘I’m on holiday’ to many people and now retailers can play their part in ensuring dogs are included too!

Cool Dog is available in a 120 ml lidded pot or a 5-litre tub to sell in scoops – for that authentic holiday experience – with a choice of delicious vanilla or banana and blueberry flavours. It is already being sold at the popular Granny Gothards ice cream parlours in the South West, where many dog owners are likely to staycation this summer. Dog-friendly Best Western Plus, Manor Hotel at the NEC, has also been favouring the brand, ensuring that as well as receiving a warm welcome, dogs have the opportunity to cool down after a long journey.

After weaning, many puppies have reduced ability to digest lactose, the natural sugar found in milk. When fed a product containing dairy, adult dogs will often react by having digestive upsets. The common condition can also be related to quantity – so the more dairy they eat, the more likely they are to experience problems. Cool Dog allows dogs to enjoy a staple summer treat that’s healthy and won’t upset their digestion, even if they have one every day of their holiday.

The aptly named Don Thaw is the man behind the brand and explains his journey, “It has taken a great deal of time to find the right partner to make the high-quality product I was aiming to bring to market. The research paid off though when I found Amanda at her multiple award-winning company, Granny Gothards, based in Devon. She has been hand making luxury ice creams, served in top restaurants, for many years and as importantly for me, she is also a dog lover. When I explained my vision, she had a clear idea of how she could make my product to the same extremely high standards and could connect with the passion I had to make a healthy ice cream brand for dogs.”

With outdoor areas at pubs, holiday parks and cafes all likely to be popular in the post-COVID summer season, Don believes that pet owners will be looking to ensure their four-legged friend can enjoy a post lockdown treat too. As well as helping to cool down pets, Cool Dog also provides nutrition – being a good source of protein, potassium, zinc and calcium.

Cool Dog has a RRP of £2.85 for a 120 ml pot. More information is available at www.cooldogicecream.co.uk. Cool Dog is currently looking for the right wholesale partner to help distribute its premium ice cream across pet and garden trade and in dog-friendly tourism hot spots.
